All about Mrs. Claus
Living at the North Pole, Mrs. Santa has few close neighbors. One of her very best friends, Lady Ginger, lives close enough to visit, but she is very busy with her writing. She is always willing to help when Mrs. Santa calls on her with a problem or to have lunch when they have time in their busy schedules.
Mrs. Santa’s friend Alice made her an afghan for Christmas to keep her legs warm while she reads in the evening. It has many tassels and is made of bright Christmas colors. When she goes out to read to the children at book stores she takes her afghan along to keep from getting a chill. The elves depend on her so it wouldn’t do to get sick and disappoint then.
People are always asking about the things Mrs. Santa wears. Her lovely skirt is made of a tarten plaid from the McFarland clan. One stormy night when Santa was making his Christmas eve rounds, Duncan McFarland found himself in a desperate situation. Santa took time from his deliveries to help. Santa never told a soul just what the problem was.
One day late in January a big box arrived at the door with a bolt of beautiful wool fabric. Enclosed with the fabric was a note for Mrs. Santa.
"This is to thank Santa for his help, may you wear it in good health. Duncan McFarland"
The lovely ruby earrings that Mrs. Santa wears were an engagement gift from Santa and her "pinky" ring is a diamond from her mother who has been gone these many years. The cameo broch holding the lace at her throat was carved from a seashell by her Grandfather for her Grandmother. He also saved all the pearls he found over his many years at sea and gave them to her for her graduation. They are sewn around her hood of the red cape she wears to keep warm on cool nights. The many shapes and sizes remind her of a wonderful, loving grandfather. He spent many years at sea before retiring to a warm hearth and the many books he had been too busy to read.
You will notice 3 keys hanging on Mrs. Santas belt. The large one is for the workshop and the others are for the treat boxes in which she keeps the cookies and candies for the elves. Nothing much is locked at the North Pole, so the keys are more for show and the merry tinkeling sounds they make as she makes her rounds in the evening.
Would you like to know what Mrs. Santa does when Christmas is done? She collects beautiful teacups and recipe books; you must remember she has a lot of elves to cook for year around. They are busy making Christmas toys and they get very hungry. Her breads are extra special and the smell of yeasty dough fills the house at least 3 days a week.
The hundreds of yards of fabric that Mrs. Santa has are used to make the doll dresses and colorful sails for the sleek sailboats. She ties a beautiful bow into the hair of each doll before it is placed into it's box. There is a large kiln in the back of the shop that is used to make heads for the baby and other dolls. The small tea sets are also made there with pretty pink roses painted on the teapots and cups by Mrs. Santa.
Where does Mrs. Santa live ?
Mrs. Santa lives in a log cabin built at the North Pole many years ago by Santa and the elves .To reach it you must first step thru the magic portal and follow the twinkling lights.
The house looks very small on the outside but things are not always as they seem .As you enter you are greeted by a huge great room ; not the tiny cottage living room as you would expect . There are many beautifully carved wood walls and a lovely large fireplace at the end of the great room where Santa and Mrs. Claus throw wonderful parties for the elves and all their friends.
Mrs. Santa’s study is upstairs where she plans the meals for the elves and the diets for the reindeer .While Santa is busy with the workshop she plans a special Christmas for all those who have worked so hard making the holiday shine for others . This usually takes place in January after all the hard work is done .
There is a very large kitchen to make all the meals and Christmas treats for Santa’s long trip .Many of the elves wives and daughters are very good cooks and make some of the pretty cookies and elegant desserts for the holidays-Mrs. Santa cannot do all the work herself you know !
There is a long magic hall past the kitchen where all the “special” rooms are located. There is a harness storage room where all the reindeer harnesses are kept ; a bottle room to store all the wishes of the children until they are opened and granted; a fairy room where all the things needed to make fairy dust are stored [ such as sparkles from frost , the glint of a dewdrop, and a sunbeam from a sunny day.] The dust is stored in red velvet bags until needed. Further down the hall is the mailroom where many elves work sorting letters from children so Santa can decide which gifts go to each .The vapor room is where all the smells of Christmas such as gingerbread, pine boughs, cinnamon, and candles are stored in crystal bottles. When Santa finds a place that doesn’t have the smell of Christmas he leaves behind a bit of vapor.
At the end of the long hallway , is the entry to the huge dome made out of ice blocks. In this the elves grow the flowers, herbs, and vegetables Mrs. Santa uses for meals and decorating. They also grow sweet carrots as treats for the reindeer. The growing house is filled with fresh loam the elves bring from the forest every spring and fertilized with reindeer droppings. The whole garden is heated by a network of pipes driven deep in the earth to bring steam to the surface.
